Heart surgeon-turned-comedian Bassem Youssef claims that Israel has “corrupted the West morally for 100 years.”
Speaking to Ollie Dugmore about Israel's war on Gaza, Youssef said, “The fact that there is an evil actor in the world who is violating international law and getting away with it is something you want to convey to the rest of the world. What kind of information?”
The comedian's current live stand-up show is called middle beast These range from his experiences in Egypt to his observations on the current state of global politics. The tour is currently sold out on four continents.
Before becoming a comedian and performer, the 50-year-old worked as a cardiothoracic surgeon in Egypt for 13 years and has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons since 2007.
Speaking to PoliticsJOE, Youssef continued: “What is your moral standing if other people commit war crimes and you allow that to happen? You can’t.
“I mean, the fact is, I've said it before, Israel has morally corrupted the West for a hundred years,” he added. “You can no longer lecture us on morality or human rights with a straight face.
Youssef referred to the 2015 terrorist attack on employees of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
“Do you remember Charlie Hebdo? Eleven people were killed. Oops. World leaders gathered in the streets of France, just like Charlie Hebdo. We changed our profile (social media profile photo) to “Je suis Charlie”. Eleven people, oh my God!
“Thirty thousand people. They're collateral damage. Unavoidable. It's sad.”
So far, at least 33,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the war in Gaza. Tensions between Palestinians and Israelis have raged for centuries, but full-scale conflict has erupted in the Gaza Strip since the October 2023 Rem Festival massacre, when the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas launched an offensive against Israeli civilians A surprise attack.
Youssef continued: “You watch these TV anchors and they say 'Yes, a lot happened and it's sad, but it has to happen. What can we do?' Not this. Anything but this. It's very frustrating. It's hilarious, but it's also painful.”
