“I’m going to fail fifth grade math.”

A primary school student's math problem leaves adults scratching their heads.

A sibling who was confused by their younger brother's homework shared the tricky dilemma on Reddit.

The Reddit user wrote: “A test question from my brother’s 5th grade math test.

The questions are all about counting how many pages a book has.

The assignment, written for children aged 10-11, reads: “Klein read 30 pages of a book on Monday and 1/8 of the book on Tuesday. On Wednesday he finished the book 1/4 of the book is left. How many pages are there in this book?”

This perplexing puzzle has left many adults confused and shocked by how much elementary school math they have forgotten.

One person wrote: “I always say to myself: 'Ugh. People really should go through a test of basic skills before entering society.”

“Then I saw this and realized I shouldn't be out in society.”

A second wrote: “Now we can see why Are you smarter than a fifth grader? He even filmed a TV series! “

A third commented: “I'm going to fail fifth grade math.”

But others wondered if there was an ulterior motive behind the post, with one saying: “Am I the only one who thinks the OP (original poster) is a fifth grader who posted an assignment to Reddit so people could reply with answers?”

However, many others see no problem with this question and explain why the answer is… Page 48.

One person commented: “The key to solving the problem is realizing that, given the fraction, our readers read exactly five-eighths of the book on Monday.”

Another shows how they work, writing: “1 book = 30 pages + 1/8 book + 1/4 book. 1 book = 30 pages + 3/8 book. 1 book – 3/8 Book = 30 pages. 5/8 book = 30 pages. 1 book = 48 pages”

A third wrote: “1/8+1/4=3/8, so 5/8 is 30, which means 1/8 is 6. 6×8 is 48.”
