Mike Tyson's fight with Jake Paul will be called off if he fails to pass a series of specific tests before the fight.

Iron Mike will take on the YouTuber-turned-boxer on July 20 in Arlington, Texas, in what is expected to be one of the most talked-about fights of the year.

Both are training hard behind the scenes, but for Tyson, in order to fight, he has to prove he's capable of it.

Since the contest is held in Texas, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is responsible for controlling the rules of the contest, which states: “A person 36 years of age or older who applies for a contestant’s license must submit a Good physical test report examinations within the past 12 months, including but not limited to EEG (electroencephalogram) and EKG (electrocardiogram).”

Considering that Tyson will be 58 years old when the fight begins, he will definitely need to pass the test.

Why did Tyson need to undergo these tests? What happens if he fails?

While the boxing legend is still in good shape, these tests are conducted to ensure that fighters – especially at the end of their careers – can remain as safe as possible.

An EEG will help assess any brain disease, while an EKG assesses heart disease and will prevent anyone with pre-existing conditions from entering the ring, which could increase their risk of serious injury during a fight.

If he fails these tests, the game will likely be called off. If TDLR chooses not to issue Tyson a license, Tyson can appeal the decision but is still under no obligation to allow it to proceed as planned.

TDLR's Competitive Sports Regulations state: “If the Executive Director determines that the results of a physical fitness test are unfavorable in any respect and, as a result, a license is not issued, the applicant may request an administrative hearing.”
