Fans shocked by 'worst ever penalty'

You can't overestimate how bad this penalty is

Fans were shocked after seeing the “worst penalty ever” in a La Liga match.

Osasuna faced Valencia in Spain's top flight on Monday night, with the hosts awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

After Valencia won 1-0, Ante Budimir stepped up and tried to save a point for Osasuna.

As has become clear, he missed out. But the real story is how he missed it.

When you think of bad penalties, you might picture a weak midfield penalty like Gareth Southgate's in 1996, or a penalty like Jason Puncheon's in White The infamous penalty at White Hart Lane sailed over the crossbar.

But Budimir may have just taken the crown for the worst penalty in professional football.

You can watch it below.

Osasuna players start their run-up and then try to pause slightly before hitting the ball, trying to send the goalkeeper the wrong way. But in the process, he seemed to confuse himself and forget how to play football.

Just as he was preparing to shoot, his foot stopped and all Budimir could do was poke the ball gently with his toe, and the ball bounced into the arms of the Valencia goalkeeper.

Many reacted to the hilarious penalty on social media, calling it “one of the worst penalties ever”.

One person joked that the goalie “had time to dive, stand up, brew and save it.”

This penalty kick was almost the last goal of the game. Valencia took all three points and kept the hope of qualifying for the Europa League.

As for Osasuna, they remain in 11th place and Budimir leaves behind a piece of football that he will probably never forget.
