An 11-year-old boy was stopped by police while driving a BMW X5 towing a caravan along the M1.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed they had recovered the car after receiving a call that the caravan had been stolen.

North Yorkshire Police wrote: “Yesterday we intercepted a BMW towing a suspected stolen caravan and were surprised to discover that the driver was an 11-year-old boy.”

“At around 3.30pm on March 7 we received a call that a caravan had been stolen from a caravan resort near Thirsk and was being towed away by a black BMW.

“We were able to track the BMW, which also had cloned number plates, traveling south along the A1.”

Police said they stopped the vehicle on the M1 45 minutes after it was reported stolen.

“But we were not prepared for the discovery of a male student sitting on the steering wheel,” police wrote in a statement.

They said a search of the car turned up “equipment commonly used by suspects to commit theft”, including “a selection of vehicle registration plates”.

North Yorkshire Police arrested the 11-year-old boy on charges of “theft, theft, equipment theft and driving offenses including dangerous driving”.

They added that no one was injured in the incident and the child has been released on conditional bail pending further investigations.
