Nowadays, football can be watched almost anywhere and everywhere, and you'd be forgiven for thinking that everyone who watches knows the ins and outs of this wonderful game.
Some rules are obviously more important than others when it comes to the outcome of a game, but there are some rules that even the most die-hard fans admit to not knowing.
One particularly confusing law is the “D” located on the edge of the penalty area.
While some may not be sure what its purpose is, most of us almost certainly call it by the wrong name.
In fact, the correct term is not “D” but “Punishment Arc” – which hints at its purpose.
Similar to a free kick, any opposing player must be at least 10 yards away from the taker.
To ensure there is no foul play during a penalty kick, players must stand behind the line and only move after an opposing player has made contact with the ball.
According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) website, the law states: “Players other than kickers and goalkeepers must: be at least 9.15 m (10 yards) from the penalty line, behind the penalty line, play within the penalty line and outside the restricted area.”
According to the Mirror, according to IFAB Rule 14, regardless of the result, if the offensive team infringes and the team scores or both infringes, the penalty must be re-implemented.
A penalty kick may also be retaken if the defender attacks but the kicker fails to take the shot.
Alternatively, if the free kicker misses but is violated by the attacking team, an indirect free kick is awarded to the defending team.
