Water problem in India

by Eklavya on June 25, 2007

Some things I learn today :

India receives 4000 BCM (Billion Cubic Meter) water as rainfall, out of which only 600 BCM is preserved by the Government in big & small dams. (Actually Govt is capable of storing water only up to this capacity !

So what needs to be done :

(1) Change the mentality that big dams are necessary and have no alternative. What a big dam can do, hundred of small dams can do more effectively. They are people friendly create less or no havoc in time of disaster. Just think of what kind of destruction a big dam can caused !!

(2) We need to build a policy for decentralizing the task of pollution control – especially the water pollution. Our great rivers have become drainage dustbin of industries. Unless we build a core plan right from the very basic level for controlling water pollution, all our so called ‘Clean the River’ program will be a huge waste of money (like they are today)

(3) Water should be a center subject. All the rivers of India should be declared as national property and no state should be allowed to stake an unjustified claim on them. Once we do this, there will be no Cauveri dispute, no dependence of Delhi on UP for water supply.

(4) People needs to be taught about value of water and how they can preserve it. It’s not a work that can be left to our politicians. All the meritorious people should come to learn, apply and spread the knowledge of water conservation. The whole society will have to play a part in it.

Water re-use, recycling and rainwater harvesting seems to be the ultimate solutions to Indias ever widening water problems. Many techniques of water purification is used, of which UV is regarded as the safest and natures way of water purification. Are the claims justified. Is UV water purification a name to go with for water purification solutions?
