'The level of abuse that followed was completely unacceptable'

Chelsea have defended midfielder Connor Gallagher after he was heavily criticized for appearing to ignore the mascot ahead of Saturday's game.

Gallagher captained Chelsea in their 2-2 draw with Burnley and is set to lead the team.

When he did, two mascots were waiting there, holding one of their hands while he tapped the back of the other – even though he had his hand outstretched.

The mascot kept his hand out but Gallagher never realized it and looked away, sparking a flood of abuse online and forcing Chelsea to issue a statement.

They said on the club's official website: “Chelsea Football Club is aware of a video clip circulating on social media from Saturday's match against Burnley which has been taken out of context.

“The abusive and defamatory comments that followed towards Conor Gallagher are completely unacceptable.

“We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities are welcome.”

A photo later shared on social media showed Gallagher wrapping his arms around both mascots and leading them onto the field.

Pochettino also defended Gallagher

Pochettino stressed his support for the England international ahead of Thursday's game against Manchester United.

“It makes me very frustrated. Because no one wants to do something like this with such intent,” he said.

“When you play football you're there to focus on the game and start the game and sometimes that happens.

“People try to find something to cause chaos and abuse. Connor is a very, very good kid who always cares about everything. I hate it when people throw random abuse on social media. It’s so easy to bully people. Too easy. Who thinks Connor The intention is to ignore the mascot? No one. Hurry up.”

Gallagher could leave in summer to ease FFP concerns

It's easy to see that Chelsea haven't had much to write home about this year.

Stamford Bridge fans are in for another mediocre year, but Gallagher is one of the few shining stars.

The midfielder wearing the captain's armband plays like a true fan. Risking his body and running around, but given Chelsea's excessive spending and need to raise funds to comply with the rules, Gallagher may be sold in the summer.

Since he graduated from the academy, Gallagher, if sold, would be classed as a direct profit and would be a significant revenue stream to help balance the books.

Spurs have been interested in the midfielder and while the club don't want to be punished, if he is sold they will lose one of the few who truly understands what it means to play for the two-time European champions.
