Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is in the grip of violence & turmoil these days. All because of a novice politician who is hell-bent on proving himself as the greatest savior of Maratha pride second only to the legendary great Shivaji of 17th Century. This politician is Raj Thackeray , the nephew of Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackray, and head of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Raj has been giving anti- North Indians statements for quite sometime and is ridiculing the festivals of Northern India (particularly the Chhat festival of Bihar). Just a few days back, he alleged the superstar Amitabh Bachchan of not doing enough for Maharashtra and insulted him for his love for the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Amitabh, who originally belongs to Allahabad (a city of UP) is very close to a North Indian politician Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party in UP. 
Raj Thackeray publically insulted Amar Singh, questioned the integrity of Amitabh and declared that Amar Singh will not be allowed to enter into Mumbai. He warned all North Indians to behave themselves in Mumbai.
Yesterday, wide spread incident of violence between supporters of Raj Thackray and Samajwadi Party (of Amar Singh ) were reported in Mumbai. We saw the grim images of innocent North Indians being brutally beaten by party activist of MNS. Poor taxi drivers were dragged out of their taxis and were brutally beaten by them, the stalls of many daily hawker were thrashed and many poor people were harassed just for their being an outsider in Mumbai.
In my opinion, these activists are not members of a political party. They are goons and criminals. The nation is in rage and strong protests against Raj Thackray have started in the country (especially in North India). In a democratic country like India, everybody has the right to move freely and earn his livelihood wherever he wants. Our constitution guarantees this by means of Fundamental Rights. There are no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, religion or any regional basis. But Mr. Raj appears to be totally ignorant about our constitution and its contents. He is behaving like a novice and his actions have already made him extremely unpopular among the masses.
Let me tell you about something about North Indian people living in Mumbai. I get this information from a leading newspaper of India.
In it’s population of 1.5 Crore (15 millions), Mumbai has 30% people of North Indian origin. This figure includes the population of Mumbai and it’s surrounding suburbs. If you add the percentage of South Indians and Gujarati/Marwaris living in Mumbai, you will find that almost 82% people living in Mumbai are outsiders and only 18% of the population is the original native of Maharashtra. Among all the Hindi speaking people in Mumbai, 80% belongs to UP & Bihar. The maximum among these are from the districts of Eastern UP like Benaras, Jaunpur, Ajamgarh, Pratapgarh, Allahabad and Basti. Some of the most essential services in Mumbai are being provided by these people. The trades related to Dairy, Milk production, education, Paan (betel leaf), Taxi transport, Flour Mills, Vegetables, Security Guards and junk items are being managed by North Indians in Mumbai. In fact these people have become part and parcel of the life in Mumbai and they are doing their best in making this city the financial hub of India. As such a blatant attack on them is likely to hamper the overall functioning of the city. Further this does not bode well for the rest of the country as well.
Mr. Raj Thackray has been a struggling politician since the time he separated from his parent party Shiv Sena. He is behaving like a flop actor who, despite his fading popularity, tries to be in the lime light by making sensational scene in the public.
Raj is a great admirer of Hitler. He once said on his birthday:
“Hitler had everything. The one thing he did not have was the ambition to conquer the world,” Raj said, adding, “you can draw whatever conclusions you want from my remarks.” (See Source)
Mr Raj ! your are not living in the Nazi Germany of 1939. You are living in India of 21st century. Please don’t try to repeat what Hitler did during those times. It will backfire on you very heavily.
UPDATE : What follow below are the comments of our fellow Indians on this issue. Some people are very angry with Raj, some are his strong supporters whereas some are disappointed with this entire issue. Some people have used extremely abusive language ( censored at appropriate places). Some have even criticized me and have questioned my knowledge of this subject. Further Update : This article was written on Feb 4, 2008. It’s been more than a year and I suppose it has served its purpose of highlighting the issue of Marathi/non-Marathi from the perspective of both sides. Though I am still getting comments from people, I suppose it will be unnecessary to drag the debate any further. Therefore, I have decide to close the comments option for this post.

No offenses to anyone here, though the derogatory remarks regarding Sri Raj Thackrey and INDIANS (who live in northern part of the sovereign republic of India)were really in bad taste. If I would have to appreciate someone here that would be the creator of the blog and secondly Ms/ Mrs Meenakshi who herself has confessed that she is a Maharashtrian. Hats off to you Meenakshi!! Practically, no one is wrong in this long thread everyone have his/ her own reasons for his/ her reaction, but how could we be such biased when we talk about Mahrashtrians, UPwaalas, Biharis and chanting Jai Hind at the end. This is mock of patriotism and nothing else.
Press/ Media is biased… I would have bought this for sure if Media would have shown the counts in terms of Marathis, Biharis, UPwaalas dead in the train bombings separately. They were all Indians who were killed and try and understand this thing people. We are fighting within ourselves and outsiders are reaping benefits, shouldn’t that have been better if Mr. Raj Thackrey would have started a movement against terrorism which probably would have made him a national leader than a regional one. It’s not about Maharashtrians Raj babu it’s about India. Sachin Tendulkar, probably the greatest exemplary of Indian in today’s age is a Maharashtrian who gives a free ticket to a Bihari spectator to watch his matches. Not because he have less people to admire him and ha need to pay people to watch him playing, it is because he knows what a true nationalist mean. When Indian team stood with T20 world cup in a Jharkhand native Captain’s hand, it was not only Bihar, Jharkhand and UPwaalas proud for him. It was all of us Indians who were proud of our boys. The great receiving of the team in Mumbai was greatly appreciated by the whole country, though we remain jealous of Mumbai’s fortune for being selected to receive great Indian warriors.
We have our India at fire, and don’t tell me if any Marathi Manoos and Mard Maratha were happy to watch blood pooled Delhi during recent bomb blasts. The fight is about India and we need to come out of this topic and think about the country and not the states. Raj Thackeray is the worst politician I have ever seen in my entire life…..And to top of it you people from maharshtra are supporting him…why do you guys cry for the Govt and private sectors jobs in Maharashtra….If you know all these jobs are meant for Indians and are achieved by merit.You guys must be having some state level public commission exams.Go through it and find it out.

Why cant people understand the real thing before they waste their time on jumping onto unjustified conclusions? I agree that the incidence of beating up Biharis and other north Indian people may paint a wrong picture of a Maharashtrian, but this is the only means and the last resort left. The anger which was there simmering inside each one of our hearts has spilled out. There were various warnings issued by Shri Raj Thackeray earlier asking not to interfere too much into the lives of a Maharashtrian,warning north Indians against pushing us to the wall, but as the saying goes Laton ke bhoot baton se nahi mante’, we had to choose the violent path. There was a huge uproar in the Lok Sabha yesterday condemming Shri Raj on the issue and also asking a ban on MNS, but did atleast one honorary parliamentarian got up to speak against the inhuman slaughtering of innocent Christians? They are alleging that the livelihoods of North Indians are snatched away in Mumbai but nobody said a word when Hindu fundamentalists were on a murdering spree in Orissa and other places. We were not used to living with filth like this earlier when the influx of north Indians was low couple of decades ago but now we have to bear their b***shit behaviour, listen to their gashtly comments, bear their absurd manners and the list goes on and on. Females no longer feel safe on the road thanks to them. I feel there is no other way to tackle this situation which was consistently getting out of control. Mumbai is a prt of Maharashtra which was increasingly forced to transform into a large SEZ where people just come and work here without paying too much heed to the rich culture of the this great city. Mumbai is an integral part of Maharashtra.

So we’re to see Maharashtra set on fire today, Raj got arrested – does the Ramayan replicate where Shri Hanuman set Lanka on fire? That would be quite stunning and funny. I needn’t express my utter bitterness over creating violence during railway examinations. But, I probably think, Laloo could have had these exams in another state than keep it in Mumbai – a “mental case”. The best way to teach MNS and Shiv Sena a lesson would be to withdraw all economic opportunities from Mumbai – let see it falling just like the Sensex crashing. It’s not in Maharashtra’s or India’s interest, but it’s possibly the best way to hit hard on MNS. Shopkeepers are observing a BLACK day in Mumbai – kudos! Isn’t it interesting to note that we need to suffer economically to teach a political lesson to MNS? And an insider information which I received a couple of days back – Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray are closely knit ( I’m sure no one is surprised to learn this) In public they like being like the Ambani brothers – obviously for political advantage and glamour.
When these guys talk about giving opportunities to the marathi manoos first – I guess what they really need is a job for themselves to stop being idle and causing vandalism. I even think the profession of psychiatrist would fare better than space engineering – these doctors will be able to cure the ailing mind of destruction. Or better still, all our politicians and parties should be enforced to learn the Indian Law and the Constitution with specific brain washing sessions on “how we should not take law in our hand and challenge the constitution especially by giving irrelevant examples”

I have read all the comments and I feel that having been born, brought up and domiciled in Maharashtra, I must put in my penny’s worth. The Indian constitution allows ppl to settle freely across state borders. One wonders who are ppl like Raj to question this wisdom of our constitution.It is also common to all countries democratic. Raj’s supporters should know that his grand parents came from out of mumbai, so maybe they should be deported back to their villages ( going by his logic, not mine). I absolutely agree with what you have to say. People like Raj Thackrey should be put behind bars or better still hanged. What does he think of himself? Some nation-moving leader or a savior of the Maharashtrians? And what’s with the Marathis, have they lost their brains, have they forgotten they are first Indians and then Marathis, Gujaratis or whatever. How can they turn so violent against their own countrymen, who come to Mumbai to earn a livelihood, sometimes even unwillingly.
What should the so called north Indians do if their own city or state have fewer options to earn bread and butter? In fact the only long term solution is to create many more Mumbais all across India. Otherwise, people like Raj Thackrey will continue to find instances to spread vandalism and attacking innocents.
Many people came to mumbai earned a lot made houses but they didnt bring politics or formed thier own political parties.
In my view, any Indian who can be gainfully employed & respects local laws, culture & standards of living is always welcome in a new city/state. If UP/Biharis migrate in hoards, live illegally in ghettos and indulge in crime then the resistance from locals is natural. The provision in Indian constitution that allows free movement of labor must be revisited & should be made conditional. The conditions can be debated. This will reduce the burden on civic resources of overly congested cities.
Recently i went to hanging garden with my wife i was not able to stroll there for even half hour the garden was literally full of north indians with starved eyes next i went to worli seaface it was the same scene over there.
Secondly why laloo doesnt recruit maharashtrians in railways. why this partiality?
when laloo can create rukus for few people from his state for injustice then why not Mr.Raj thackerey would do for his state? what is wrong with it ?he is just fighting for thier rights. Nothing was being solved calmly,issues like marathi sign boards & migrants taking local jobs etc etc,so he did it with a bang and people have given proof yesterday(21/10/08) that they are with him.The active leaders of MNS from all over maharashtra and mumbai were in police custody and some remaining were underground then from where did this crowd came from ? Dear readers this was common man on streets who couldnt take it anymore.no one can take beatings for wrong cause.A solid grudge has created among the locals as media (all Hindi and some English channels) declared marathi manoos as a villain, in his own state for fighting for his rights and gave him a name of MNS worker,no, it was just a common man and this is the start of a new revolution.
Now you decide who is feeling insecured? Locals or migrants ?
Before it were locals so there was no issue let the things go as they were going And now it is migrants so there is a big issue cause one cant afford to loose a hen that lays golden eggs, so not only north Indians but all the people who feel they don’t belong to Mumbai are feeling insecured
If laloo has something for his people then why doesnt he do something for them so that they dont have to go in other states to earn.instead he backs them to do so.none of the leaders in north who are filthy rich have done anything for people.
north indian man says “hamari pachaas acre jameen hai gaon me” and its barren so whats the use ?
they come to mumbai work like donkeys,away from thier loved ones away from thier wives for years (poor she).And he gets frustrated,there no peace of mind. and after many years he goes to gaon and greets his wife with a deadly virus and some false stories of his happiness, and returns,leaving his loved ones to die physically or mentally,what a pity.
and the resposible person mr laoo yadav will have to suffer for all this as he is the one who is being cursed,poor people, why live such a life? just for few bucks.

Dear friend, Don’t repeat the same mistake committed by Raj Thackeray and his supporters. No personal comments on the caliber or talent of Marathi people. Despite having bitterness in my heart owing to recent incidents, I still feel that average Marathis are still the simple, down-to-earth and very honest people. Their love for India is unquestionable.
I am a comman person with a feeling of sadness as i read the news of navnirman sena and shiv sena being unjustifed to there own contrymen.It is sad to see how the hard work of social reformers is being washed off by the great and powerful shiv seniks and the NNS
.Are they really concerned or are they repeating the history by sowing the seeds of differences.Reminds me of’Divide and rule!’It makes me think if these leaders are they really concerned about the comman man.I understand the issue of mumbai being overpopulated.But by interfering with right to freedom,the powerful and knowledgable siv seniks and navnirman sena are not setting an example of an ideal poltician.They should use their powers to improve the quality of living of a mumbaite.An ideal leader takes with him/her everyone and moves furthur.I only would like to know if these people who want to improve the quality of lives of their family members and if some elderly member of the family or a sick member of the family seem to be a hurdle,will they throw them away?I know this example is not compeletely suitable to the situation and that the community they want to move out is neither weak nor sick.The community they don’t want if taken togather can fulfil dreams of more progress of mumbai.
I have been moving around the world and realised that the picture of Mumbai can bee changed by the people who love it.So these leaders can demand speedy progress,create recreational centres in mumbai and make it better place.I request leaders to stop dicrimination or else many other communities may start realising that these leaders as a threat to them.So i request the editor to kindly carry my opinion to my country men.Also that Mr.Amitabh Bachan is a jewel of our country with whose name India is also identified in so many counties.He is not only a U.P’ite but an ambassodor of India.So respect him.Staying away from county makes me feel this more as I see it quite often.In some countries I say that I come from India and they immediately say country of Mr.Amithabh and Shrukh Khan.
Negative things are more appealing to humans then positive things, hatred has become more powerful and gets attention easily, hence politicians have used this human behaviour as their tool which has led to politics of hatred. Raj who is trying to establish himself as a politician is also using this politics of hatred. I want to ask Mr Raj and all those so-called Marathi manoos on this website, if you really want to do something, can you expel all the illegal Bangladeshis / Pakistanis from Mumbai ? If you do this, this will be a great relief to the infrastructure because these are the ppl who kill innocents.
