Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is in the grip of violence & turmoil these days. All because of a novice politician who is hell-bent on proving himself as the greatest savior of Maratha pride second only to the legendary great Shivaji of 17th Century. This politician is Raj Thackeray , the nephew of Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackray, and head of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Raj has been giving anti- North Indians statements for quite sometime and is ridiculing the festivals of Northern India (particularly the Chhat festival of Bihar). Just a few days back, he alleged the superstar Amitabh Bachchan of not doing enough for Maharashtra and insulted him for his love for the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Amitabh, who originally belongs to Allahabad (a city of UP) is very close to a North Indian politician Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party in UP. 
Raj Thackeray publically insulted Amar Singh, questioned the integrity of Amitabh and declared that Amar Singh will not be allowed to enter into Mumbai. He warned all North Indians to behave themselves in Mumbai.
Yesterday, wide spread incident of violence between supporters of Raj Thackray and Samajwadi Party (of Amar Singh ) were reported in Mumbai. We saw the grim images of innocent North Indians being brutally beaten by party activist of MNS. Poor taxi drivers were dragged out of their taxis and were brutally beaten by them, the stalls of many daily hawker were thrashed and many poor people were harassed just for their being an outsider in Mumbai.
In my opinion, these activists are not members of a political party. They are goons and criminals. The nation is in rage and strong protests against Raj Thackray have started in the country (especially in North India). In a democratic country like India, everybody has the right to move freely and earn his livelihood wherever he wants. Our constitution guarantees this by means of Fundamental Rights. There are no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, religion or any regional basis. But Mr. Raj appears to be totally ignorant about our constitution and its contents. He is behaving like a novice and his actions have already made him extremely unpopular among the masses.
Let me tell you about something about North Indian people living in Mumbai. I get this information from a leading newspaper of India.
In it’s population of 1.5 Crore (15 millions), Mumbai has 30% people of North Indian origin. This figure includes the population of Mumbai and it’s surrounding suburbs. If you add the percentage of South Indians and Gujarati/Marwaris living in Mumbai, you will find that almost 82% people living in Mumbai are outsiders and only 18% of the population is the original native of Maharashtra. Among all the Hindi speaking people in Mumbai, 80% belongs to UP & Bihar. The maximum among these are from the districts of Eastern UP like Benaras, Jaunpur, Ajamgarh, Pratapgarh, Allahabad and Basti. Some of the most essential services in Mumbai are being provided by these people. The trades related to Dairy, Milk production, education, Paan (betel leaf), Taxi transport, Flour Mills, Vegetables, Security Guards and junk items are being managed by North Indians in Mumbai. In fact these people have become part and parcel of the life in Mumbai and they are doing their best in making this city the financial hub of India. As such a blatant attack on them is likely to hamper the overall functioning of the city. Further this does not bode well for the rest of the country as well.
Mr. Raj Thackray has been a struggling politician since the time he separated from his parent party Shiv Sena. He is behaving like a flop actor who, despite his fading popularity, tries to be in the lime light by making sensational scene in the public.
Raj is a great admirer of Hitler. He once said on his birthday:
“Hitler had everything. The one thing he did not have was the ambition to conquer the world,” Raj said, adding, “you can draw whatever conclusions you want from my remarks.” (See Source)
Mr Raj ! your are not living in the Nazi Germany of 1939. You are living in India of 21st century. Please don’t try to repeat what Hitler did during those times. It will backfire on you very heavily.
UPDATE : What follow below are the comments of our fellow Indians on this issue. Some people are very angry with Raj, some are his strong supporters whereas some are disappointed with this entire issue. Some people have used extremely abusive language ( censored at appropriate places). Some have even criticized me and have questioned my knowledge of this subject. Feel free to make a comment here if you wish. No matter which side of fence you are, please don’t use abusive language in your comments.
Further Update : This article was written on Feb 4, 2008. It’s been more than a year and I suppose it has served its purpose of highlighting the issue of Marathi/non-Marathi from the perspective of both sides. Though I am still getting comments from people, I suppose it will be unnecessary to drag the debate any further. Therefore, I have decide to close the comments option for this post.

What is 1 of d main reasons for mumbai being the Financial capital, and being such a big job creator, etc. ?
Mainly, coz of the National Stock Exchange & The Bombay Stock Exchange..they r currently ranked 3rd and 10th respectively in terms of Derivatives contracts traded in the world !!! What a pride !!!
Daily turnover in Derivative is avg Rs 20000 cr plus!! Check nseindia.com & bseindia.com if u dont beleive me. Of course this is turnover the commission the exchanges get is like 80paise per 1 lac…but that still means crores daily!!!! Part of it has to be paid to Gov also…so again a benefit. All the FIIs play here & have offices here only coz of these 2 exchanges otherwise where will they play??
Now who r the domestic players? i.e brokers, sub-brokers, clearing members, etc? abt 90%+ of them are Guj n Marwaris.
Now, assume they r not there (i.e. they go back)…so..no trading, no commision…and hence no FIIs to pay Operating fees to govt.
I am ready to bet my life on this that this fees is an “unbeleivable” amount.
And these FIIs rent out office spaces in Fort, L Parel, etc. for rates that u & me would dare to even dream of!!! Their top execs also rent/buy residential properties so they can oversee business locally. So, it supports the REAL ESTATE scene of Mumbai.
But the main domestice players are outsiders only right ?
So, u see, things are so inter-related that u kill one cog, the whole machinery suffers bigtime!!

Whooaa! This topic is getting hotter and rather more personal than discussing whether raj is good / bad for the country… oops I mean maharashtra. I guess, I’ve said enough to convey my thoughts that we should work for the nation rather than to work individually as a state.
But the last comment of vinit had me writing back – how does raj thackeray being anti-north indian connect to people earning money? I mean, don’t all of us work and struggle to earn money for a good living. And if you thought Mumbai is the richest and the only richest city in india, think again. Statics have shown again and again that Punjab, Haryana, Delhi are filthy rich. Not just businessmen, but even the farmers are very rich! That’s because everyone works extremely hard. Nobody goes to Mumbai only to mint money. It is where opportunity strikes, people move to earn a living. So what if Mumbai is the financial capital? Bangalore is the silicon valley, Delhi is our national capital of strategic importance, and each city has its own contribution to make us nation as a whole.
Finally, if you thought politicians are here in the world to “represent” the voice of the nation; you’re mistaken! They’re here to only hoard money by hook or by crook – and that includes every damn politician, be it Chidambaram or Raj or Advani!
Think rationally people, this blog is not a cola war or cut throat competition between two monopolies! It’s to think beyond irrational behaviour of our politicians. Why let their act suffer our routine? Raj and the like only are claiming publicity by behaving crazy. I believe its inhuman to create riots and cause scare in schools, colleges and public offices. This is equivalent to terrorism – not a bomb blast, but with the vulgar acts of MNS and Shiv Sainiks, they should be given a capital punishment. Someone said in this blog that all terrorists are Muslims – I deny. With situations in Orissa and Assam, where Hindu fanatics are creating a scare, such Hindus are no better ( this is out of the scope of the blog though!)Why are we discussing terrorism in this blog? There are plenty of terrorism related blogs on the net to comment on.
Lastly, nobody is an ugly duckling or a black sheep in God’s eyes. May be MNS thinks it is god, but to no one. No sane and educated person will appreciate MNS’ ideologies. Infact, as far as I know, in Pune MNS is turning out to be subject of joke. People including maharashtrians have started mocking and laughing at MNS’ strategies and marathi language pride!
As a thought, wouldn’t Raj Thackeray be so proud that so many people discuss him? That he’s such a highlighted figure – in the limelight just when he needs it! Perfect match for Prakash Karat!

I guess the coward Jet employees went to coward Raj for help because only Raj can violate regulations and our constitution. Even the labour ministry declared that Jet had not violated any rules by laying off employees on probation. For that matter of fact, when you sign the employment contract, you understand that the employer has a right to terminate you during probation without stating any reasons thereof. So by grounding flights and threatening Jet in Maharashtra, Raj purely violated rules. And he was there to stand by Jet employees only to get publicity from people. Cowards often mix with cowards who dictate terms. And I’m surprised that Raj supported 80% non marathi employees! I thought he would be more than happy to get them kicked out of Maharashtra. What a traitor to his own words. So now when Air India has also laid off its employees in a more subtle way, will Raj walk upto Praful Patel and ground AI flights? What does he mean by saying so? Lay his body at the wheels? Or hijack the flight and land it in Pakistan instead? Or pelt stones which MNS is so famous for – but alas, nothing will help! MNS and it’s leader Raj Thackeray are no less then Bin Laden- just glamour and gibberish talking for the heck of it!
What I still don’t understand is why did all marathi people not feel downtrodden all these years? To be more precise, mumbaikars never felt threatened all these years. Did the risisng start Mr Raj make you feel “poor little left out” one fine day using derogatory comments and methods? Has anyone seen the way MNS brutally beats innocent people who work hard? Has anyone witnessed how their “disgusting” behaviour with women? Has anyone realised how harmful these MNS are as anti-social elements? Frankly, I doubt MNS is Indian by nature and respect any of the Indian culture. If they respect the so called “marathi- culture” then I doubt I would want to call myself a Maharashtrian. I don’t think marathi culture calls for violence and derogatory comments and threatening people’s life every now and then.

2)air india is not planning to “laid off its employees in a more subtle way” (as per ur comment)……………AIR INDIA is not a private company and mr.prafful patel is not the chairperson of it.it is a government body (dont u know that?)
even the jet employees are thanking RAJ SAHEB.
3)talking about marathi culture,marathas were the one who fought against MOGHULS AND BRITISH so bravely and that is why you will often find forts of SHIVAJI MAHARAJ are damaged badly in wars unlike palaces in rajasthan where RAJPUTS gave up their shrine to attackers(except MAHA RANA PRATAP)
so it is in the blood to fight for justice !

For once, I don’t attack anyone personally cos we all have a right to speech. I don’t have to justify my statements here, cos this blog is to express one’s own opinion.
OK AI is a government body and hence Mr Praful Patel has shouted wide and loud that the employees won’t be retrenched but can go on a leave without pay. Isn’t that equivalent to saying you’re laid off for those many years? Mr Patel is not the chairman, so similarly Raj is not the chairman of Jet to glorify that he will ground Jet planes! Give me a break, it is pure publicity. Jet employees and Raj both are losers in life in my opinion. Jet employees have themselves agreed to be terminated during probation while signing the employment contract.
No one is paying Jet to suffer losses and if the conditions won’t improve, the entire aviation industry will be shut down. Then will Raj start his own airline and pay all airline staff? And as to your statement, what justice are the maharashtrian fighting for right now? LIke someone said long earlier in this blog, don’t glorify the past of Shivaji Maharaj, etc for the present. Shivaji maharaj DID NOT PELT STONES or cause violence or passed derogatory comments against fellow INDIANS. All Raj supporters are behaving as if other non marathi are some alien from planet mars! If you get a good opportunity to work in another state, wouldn’t you move ahead? what justice are you fighting for? And why did you realise that you were discriminated on the very day Raj Thackeray started shining as a hero for unjust reasons? Don’t you have a good job? A good living? So what if Mumbai is dirty and populated? It is not only because of north indians… It is because of everyone like you and me. If you think you want to do something good for your culture, why not do productive work? Why not set up a NGO to promote art, culture, literature, social service? Why just sit at home and just justify fanatics?

How can anybody on this earth could like this menace “The Raj Thakrey” in other words he want to become Hitler of his time, but lemme make it very clear he is non other then SHITLER.
His record in Maharashtra Police is not even clean. Do people understand what the word “clean” means in social terms? We can find these kinda people everywhere start from our school-not to mention sneaky bomby kinda guys we use to see.
Then in our college-hmmm kinda people creating fuss in everything.

This guy has not taken care of his parents in old times he uses to abuse them; his own wife disregards him phew!!! I learned one thing during my school days that if you want to be a good person in society then u have to me a good person in your family first. Your family is your anchor.
When you ask Mr Shitler that what exactly he wants in “His Maharashtra” he himself don’t know he just want to rule the state and sad part is people inside this state are so foolish that in spite of having their own education, knowledge, common sense etc etc. they still admire this weed. In hindi “unki Phatt ti hai”.
Attacking people, blaming bachans, screwing others happiness, I mean all negative deeds he is carrying, in one soul. I think he needs some mental treatment serious treatment I must say.
Now let’s talk about Maharshtra Navnirman Sena-MNS. Does he know what this word means? People inside this so call sena must be highly qualified doctors, engineers, CAs, Teachers….what???? Can u repeat what u said??? What a joke? Can I see the list of MNS candidates and their education profile? No I can’t cause these are the people who don’t have anything to do their own, they are not good for anything in the society so they joined some sena and wanna live their life on the party earnings.

1. i think u should be well aware about who is using bad language.
We are just expressing our opinions on blogs but Mr. Raj Thackarey is using a typicall bhaigiri language against north indian in front of media. He didnt even bother what he is speaking and where.
2. Even we know how the maharashtrians are so ..there is no need for u to explain about them.
They just drink Desi Daroo with the money earned by his wife and enjoy there life in Guttars. However in this case north indians do respect females
3. I think each and every community has rights to promote their own community.
I agree that in early 70’s only south indians were rulling on the seats of all public and private company’s management and executive level bUT THIS WAS BCOZ OF THEIR TALLENT.
A north indian child from its child hood thinks of being an IAS officer but a marathi child thinks of being a BHAI of mumbai. so this would be very clear wht tallent marathi people have
90% of IAS & IPS officers are north indians and this is bcoz of there positive attiude towards there goal and bcoz of there tallent.

North indians r ready even for a low profile work bcoz they care for there family and THEY DO NOT ASK THERE WIFES TO GO FOR JOB AND FEED THEM.
YES, I think all u jobless people should go to jail so that u all can depand on jail authorities for ur food and requirement AND NOT ON UR WIFES.
