Goonda Raj of Raj Thackeray in Mumbai

Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is in the grip of violence & turmoil these days. All because of a novice politician who is hell-bent on proving himself as the greatest savior of Maratha pride second only to the legendary great Shivaji of 17th Century. This politician is Raj Thackeray , the nephew of Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackray, and head of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Raj has been giving anti- North Indians statements for quite sometime and is ridiculing the festivals of Northern India (particularly the Chhat festival of Bihar). Just a few days back, he alleged the superstar Amitabh Bachchan of not doing enough for Maharashtra and insulted him for his love for the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Amitabh, who originally belongs to Allahabad (a city of UP) is very close to a North Indian politician Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party in UP. raj_thackery.jpg

Raj Thackeray publically insulted Amar Singh, questioned the integrity of Amitabh and declared that Amar Singh will not be allowed to enter into Mumbai. He warned all North Indians to behave themselves in Mumbai.

Yesterday, wide spread incident of violence between supporters of Raj Thackray and Samajwadi Party (of Amar Singh ) were reported in Mumbai. We saw the grim images of innocent North Indians being brutally beaten by party activist of MNS. Poor taxi drivers were dragged out of their taxis and were brutally beaten by them, the stalls of many daily hawker were thrashed and many poor people were harassed just for their being an outsider in Mumbai.

In my opinion, these activists are not members of a political party. They are goons and criminals. The nation is in rage and strong protests against Raj Thackray have started in the country (especially in North India). In a democratic country like India, everybody has the right to move freely and earn his livelihood wherever he wants. Our constitution guarantees this by means of Fundamental Rights. There are no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, religion or any regional basis. But Mr. Raj appears to be totally ignorant about our constitution and its contents. He is behaving like a novice and his actions have already made him extremely unpopular among the masses.

Let me tell you about something about North Indian people living in Mumbai. I get this information from a leading newspaper of India.

In it’s population of 1.5 Crore (15 millions), Mumbai has 30% people of North Indian origin. This figure includes the population of Mumbai and it’s surrounding suburbs. If you add the percentage of South Indians and Gujarati/Marwaris living in Mumbai, you will find that almost 82% people living in Mumbai are outsiders and only 18% of the population is the original native of Maharashtra. Among all the Hindi speaking people in Mumbai, 80% belongs to UP & Bihar. The maximum among these are from the districts of Eastern UP like Benaras, Jaunpur, Ajamgarh, Pratapgarh, Allahabad and Basti. Some of the most essential services in Mumbai are being provided by these people. The trades related to Dairy, Milk production, education, Paan (betel leaf), Taxi transport, Flour Mills, Vegetables, Security Guards and junk items are being managed by North Indians in Mumbai. In fact these people have become part and parcel of the life in Mumbai and they are doing their best in making this city the financial hub of India. As such a blatant attack on them is likely to hamper the overall functioning of the city. Further this does not bode well for the rest of the country as well.

Mr. Raj Thackray has been a struggling politician since the time he separated from his parent party Shiv Sena. He is behaving like a flop actor who, despite his fading popularity, tries to be in the lime light by making sensational scene in the public.

Raj is a great admirer of Hitler. He once said on his birthday:

“”Hitler had everything. The one thing he did not have was the ambition to conquer the world,” Raj said, adding, “you can draw whatever conclusions you want from my remarks.” (See Source)

Mr Raj ! your are not living in the Nazi Germany of 1939. You are living in India of 21st century. Please don’t try to repeat what Hitler did during those times. It will backfire on you very heavily.

It is really sad to see fools who know nothing write about things like they have done doctoral thesis on the subject. Remember, these are the same peple who critisized Modi like hell and are now saying Modi is a born leader. They generally fail in their predictions as well as analysis. When Modi killed hundreds in the name of religion, no one arrested him, but these people want to arrest Raj eventhough not a single drop of blood has been shed. Actually, whenever Maharashtrian society has been in danger, a superhero has rised everytime, first Shalivahan the great, then the Yadava of Deogiri, then Shivaji himself and now the time has come for another hero to rise. Whether Raj Thackeray is that hero or it will be someone else, that’s the question……

So at last we got a comment from somebody who favours Raj Thackeray.

“whenever Maharashtrian society has been in danger, a superhero has rised everytime…”

Meharashtrian society is in danger ! Really ? Marathi Man Can you please tell us why?

Thanks for reacting to my comment Eklavya. I had thought you are also like those self-proclaimed guardians of free expression, who refused to publish my perfectly democratic comment, free of any cuss-words or rhetoric. You know who I am speaking about, NDTV.com, and such others, of course. Coming to the issue at hand, whatever Raj has said has been in the minds of Maharashtrians since quite a few years. It is this simmering discontent that has spilled onto the streets. It’s not just Maharashtrian society but the whole Maharashtrian culture which is in danger of North Indian influence. And this is no good news for a society, which predates the Hindi society, for a nation which has existed for more than 2000 years. Come to Mumbai and what do you see? Where is Marathi culture ? Nowhere. Chatwallas, Bhajiwallas and Taiwalas have made this mini-UP. And we cannot let this happen. Would the Bangalis give away Kolkata? Even though, a few Marwadis have established business there, Bengalis look down upon them and this has been well-documented in many movies and books written by Bengalis themselves. So, why cant we, the Mahrashtrians, descendants of the great Maratha empire which once ruled from Attock till Tanjore, not try to save our culture ?

Dear Marathi man, feel free to post your views on this issue. I am not going to censor them as I myself want to know the view from the other’s side.

Regarding your concern about the fading identity of Marathi people owing to growing influence of North Indians in Mumbai, I fully agree that people of Maharashtra have every right to preserve their rich cultural identity and take necessary steps for it. However, beating innocent people on street, insulting eminent personalities and questioning their contribution for the state and involving in petty acts of threatening are not going to preserve/enrich Marathi culture. In fact these incidents have painted a very wrong pictures of Marathi people in the eyes of other countrymen.

I hope those involved in violence will find some more creative and effective way to channel their concerns about this identity crisis in Maaharashtra.

North Indians are not bad, but the situation created in North Indian states by their criminal blood sucking leaders has eaten away all funds kept for development for poor low profile people. Due to this there is no food, no jobs, that is why migration from these states is towrds Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat & other so called good states !!. Whether it is Paswan or Mayawati or Lalu ( jo*ker), they have exploited the public fund in millions. the majority of people are unskilled so impressed by joker stunts & votes to either jokers or gundas. These leaders have not done anything for these poor people, so migration starts !!!.
Raj Thackery is true & honest in his opinion. These sandeep Baaaaaste****d has written what his father has taught to him. Better he fu****k himself. This type of untrustable & foolish people write without any base knowledge. Do not use vulgur language otherwise I will reply in same language !!!!.Jai Hind

We all know that the city is getting saturated in all the respects, but driving the people out is not the solution. Besides that i would like to ask what Indian Govt is doing about all this????
Why Indian Govt should’nt be blamed for not formulating the legislation so that the population is not concentrated in one particular city. Why can’t the reasons which compells a person to migrate to other state are taken care of??????

Indeed, congratulatins to Eklavya and others as an entry from this blog has been published in this Sunday’s Mumbai Mirror.

Coming back to the topic at hand, it has become fashionable in the media and other areas to bash Maharashtrians as chauvinists, but people never consider the reasn for Marathi nationalism turning violent. If you check the current social scenario of Mumbai, you would understand. A leading daily carried a front page story of prominent Muslims not getting flats in societies just because they were Muslims. But the dialy completely ignored the fact that even Maharashtrians are going through this ordeal. Societies where vegetarian Jains and Gujaratis are based have closed their doors on Maharashtrians. But cash-rich Punjabis are allowed even though they too are non-vegetarians. And these are the same people who make a hue and cry about Raj’s speeches and call themselves the champions of National Integration. The height of this National Integration came when a Gujju corporator from Matunga, Mumbai proposed a Vegetarian Zone which virtually disallowed any member of the native ethnic community to move into that place. Is this alright with the so-called intellectuals and the liberals ? We, Maharashtrians have been very much accomodating and inclusive and this is what we get ? Then, it is but natural for people like Raj to do what they are doing.

I have read all comments on this site. What i have found that those who have opposed Raj have used a very bad language to communicate. Anyway since these people are from a place i.e. U.P., Bihar which are ugly, poor in culture and has goondaraj and have netas like lallu, paswan, amarsingh, mulayamsingh, mayavati, rabdi we cant expect a good language from them.

If you all see the history you will find that a Maharashtrian has always helped other people and other state in their problems. maharashtrian was always against violence. Maharashtrian has to start violence because he was neglected by south indians and north indians on all levels whether it is job or business. Many people say that Marathi person dosen’t work hard and have no knowledge. But is is not true.

In early 70’s only south indians were rulling on the seats of all public and private company’s management and executive level. These people were giving jobs only to people from their state neglecting local maharashtrian candidate who have equal or more calibre. So Bal Thackrey started campaign against south indians. The mentality of any south indian manager is not still changed.

After 1980 north indians from UP Bihar started shifting to mumbai. Every year the number were increasing. Since the people from these states are not well qualified they started all type of low profile work which local people don’t like to do because of good education level and mental block against business.

The people from UP, Bihar started building slums illegally and inviting their relatives to settle down in mumbai. Ignorance by all local municipal officers, political leaders of all parties, corporators, M.L.A’s, M.P.’s towards these increasing slums is responsible for todays situation. A person from UP Bihar works at low rate does business at low margin and a maharashtrian works at higher rate and sells products at higher margin. But every one has to understand that a u.p., bihari lives illegally, dosent pays any taxes whereas a maharashtrian lives legally and pays all taxes like income tax, house tax, education cess, service tax, vat etc. U P, bihari’s earn more money than marathi persons but spends money in fu***ing at kamathipura, juhu, bhiwandi, ladies bar, eating paan, gutkha, bidi etc. So they are not bichchara or poor.

All north indians have made mumbai like a dustbin. Now supreme court should order that all slums after 1990 should be removed irrespective of religion, caste, language. We all maharashtrians will take care of marathi slumwala’s and all others should be returned to either their state or purchase property in mumbai or live in abu asim azmi’s, sanjay nirupam’s, kripashankar’s, gurudas kamat’s, amitabh bachchan’s home no problem.

In today’s kaliyug marathi persons quality points i.e. helping to others, loyalty, honesty has become hurdles in his self development.

Raj has raised the issue. Now the impact will be big. If govt. sends marathis to jail I would like to request all unemployed marathi’s to go to jail so that at least they will get food and place to sleep there.

jai Hind !! Jai Maharashtra !!

      Why Blame Raj ?

He has said Nothing New. But this time, for the very first time, he
has been…ALLOWED TO DO…what he normally ONLY SAYS…

      Why?

Mrs.Gandhi has been shown that Narayan Rane is not needed to bring the Pro Sena Maharastrian Vote Bank to her. Raj’s MNS is an outside supporter of Congress in all the Municipalities where MNS has some seats. In this last one week, Raj has been allowed to further eat into Sena’s Vote share, and tacitly bring that share to support Congress from outside in coming Months through MNS. Divide and Rule always works friends.

It is a masterstroke. Rane marginalised, Uddhav marginalised, BJP
Marginalised… all in a single stroke of ALLOWING Raj TO DO, what he
has ALWAYS ONLY been able to SAY.

And let the Blame too be taken by the Police for the Inaction.

Mumbai is for all not only for marathi. But live here peacefuly and legally. Supreme court should order to remove all slums before 1990. This will be the perfect solution for peace in mumbai.

I am so ashamed at all this bad blood, bad language and pure hatred spreading in chatrooms, on TV and blogs - practically everyone is talking about what Raj Thackerey said or not said. No one has talked outside the symptom, no one has talked about the root cause!!!

This shows that people are reacting without even completely thinking of the problem or listening to other’s views. This is the main fault that is dividing India. India has been a mix of cultures, opinions, lifestyles solely because people used to respect each other - not only within the community but outside of it as well. I have lived in an apt with a Hindu Brahmin, a Sikh, a Muslim and a Christian for 2.5 year - being best of friends and participating in each other’s joys and sorrows. We still are good friends. This comes from understanding the boundaries of another person.

Since the constitution allows us to travel withing India ‘freely’, live anywhere, work anywhere - we have to be cognizant that we are migrating into a different cultural boundaries whenever we move. It is our responsibility to respect those around us. We should celebrate our festivals, but politicians make it a show of their strength more than anything else. I hate the fact that huge processions are taken out, inconveniencing the common man, bringing out traffic jams and what not. Mumbai sees this for most part of the second half of a year. This is outrageous. Won’t someone who has lived in Mumbai for years see the difference and react?

Second and the most biggest issue - why are so many poor from Bihar and UP coming down to Delhi/Mumbai is such numbers? Why do you see slums as far as your eyes can see in Mumbai? These are just the symptoms. When the government in Bihar and UP cannot provide for their very own people - what choice do they have? The people have been failed by the very same ‘Amar Singhs’ who have filled their coffers with crores of rupees - while the common man struggles to feed his family. Villages upon Villages have no means to self sustain - no industries (the same states have amongst the lowest literacy and industry growth rates). Same is the case in agricultural belt of Maharashtra. These people send one person to Mumbai, who earns some money - which is like a goldmine for people back home - and then you see entire villages moving to the cities in search of a better life.

Do they get a better life here? Yes and No. Yes, because they have access to basics, much easier than in their villages. No, because you have to walk through the slums to see their condition. I have walked through and it brings tears to my eyes seeing what they have to go through every day.

Mumbai has been invaded by millions of slum dwellers - life for everyone has changed. But beware, bigger issues are lying dormant beneath and no one is talking about them. Least of all our ‘holy’ politicians - who try to show that they understand our real issues - while it is they who are laughing away to riches - at our expense.

WAKE UP INDIA. You are being screwed, ur families raped, and you are standing outside your door throwing garbage at your neighbours. Ask the tough questions, be united and hold these office bearers accountable.

As pointed out earlier, we need to be united to throw the politicians who have not contributed to the welfare of our country. It’s no use to indulge in violence in the name of religion and / or caste; be it maharashtrian or bihari or UP - we are all Indians. And that should make us proud. We cannot let India down in the name of religion globally. What is worth seeing here is beyond politics. If the political leaders have some grudges against each other, I believe it should not affect the routine life of common people like us. The dirty political game can be played personally by the leaders without disturbing law and order.

There are instances known of political leaders from different parties who are claimed to be enemies in the face of media; however these leaders are found hugging and shaking hands with each other in private meetings. And we - common people believe them to be LEADERS of India? Or leaders of destroying India. Britishers left India in 1947 - the end to the divide and rule regime. And now in 2008 our political leaders are “making history repeat”.

I would like to ask - is this violence and fear of living in a city worth at the cost of our country’s development? Every city’s development adds to the development of our country - and that’s what holds value - not any religion’s development. Its of no use to be a developed state alone in the whole country - because India is far bigger than Maharashtra.

Cultures and traditions do not fade because of variety of religions living together. Had that been the case, the Indians in USA or UK wouldn’t know diwali, dassera and holi all their lives! Cultures and traditions are to be preserved by your ownself. It is a gift passed on by generations of people. How well you preserve this culture is upto you - nothing to do with people in your neighbourhood. Why take up violent methods to drive them out?

I personally don’t believe that the maharashtrians have competiton from the “other indians” over employment in Maharasthtra. Every person has to toil - and this is preached in our Holy Bhagwad Gita. If we fight within our country over religions because of politicians, then there’s no difference between the India - Pakistan war and the Maharashtrian - North India war. We live in a democratic country where everyone should respect each other cultures.

And as SAD INDIAN said - wake up india! Leave the religions behind. If you think there are slums in your area, just find out how you can possibly help them rather than blaming and beating a poor person for building a slum. Always think - what if you were in their shoes? What if you were living hand to mouth like them?

Jai Hind! Proud to be an Indian!

Marathis are always welcoming to people from other states. It should be evident from the large population of Non-Marathis in Maharashtra - not just in Mumbai but thro’out the State.

The discontent among Marathis in my opinion also comes from unfairness demonstrated by Non-Marathis when it comes to offering jobs i.e. while Marathis tend to be fair when in position of power to offer employment, non-Marathis tend to hire some one that speaks their language. I certainly do not want to make a blanket statement. But that’s the impression I got by observing Upper/Middle Management/Employee Lists of Govt/Semi Govt establishments.

      For e.g.

      1. Look at Telephone Nigam Oraganizations in Delhi and Mumbai - don’t they look the same ? Marathis are almost missing from Mumbai MTNL. I’m confident many of these folks are Non-Marathis that do not know Marathi language or culture i.e. these are implants from outside.

      2. How can Dombivli (predominantly Marathi town) Rly Station ticket window has all Non-Marathis who know no Marathi working them?

      3. How can a LIC Development Officer in an area which is predominantly Marathi be non-Marathi who has no knowledge of Marathi?

Believe me this can only happen in Mumbai/Maharashtra and if you reverse the situation its close to being impossible in any other state.

I feel Marathis are targetted and positions of public interface are on purpose offered to Non-Marathis that way the masses are always brain washed with the theme that “business in Maharashtra” need to be conducted in Hindi.

I do believe us Marathis are progressive, open-minded and are welcoming and tolerant of others as long as they play a fair game. We are proud to be indians first but only as long as others play a fair game with us. If non-Marathis are systematically and consistently willing to play the dirty game of favoriticism we’ve no option but to defend ourselves and our identity.

I would also want to comment on some things with reference to Raj Controversy :

      1. Raj did not say any of his comments on his own, he was provoked and was reacting to comments from the Samajvadi Leader from North, was he not?

      2. Some people are now pushing for Hindi in Mumbai Mahanagarpalika. Again this kind of non-sense could only be tolerated in Maharashtra. Hindi is often touted as the National Language and therefore they want to replace English with Hindi which is not completely accurate. Those who have read Indian Constitution which is also available online know that the fact is all Indian Languages have been given the status of National Language by our Constitution.

      3. I often see comments that say Mumbai is made great by entrepreuners which are Non-Marathis and what if they all decide to leave. Here’s what I say - let them leave. They are not here in Mumabi conducting business because they love the city, Marathis, their language or culture. They’re not doing any favor to anyone but themselves. They’re here not for anything but their capitalistic interest, Mumbai provides them a safe place to conduct business with a large base of educated workers and consumers, they get the best bang for the buck here and that’s why they’re here. Its a 2 way street folks.

The fact is non-Marathis that assimilate and respect the local language / culture and play a fair game are and will always be welcome in Maharashtra.

In summary, I think the effective solution to these problems could be to adopt a 2 language system to conduct business with Marathi first and English second. If only Marathis speak their language everywhere most of the problems would take care of themselves.

At the outset I would like to make it clear that the following views are purely my opinion….

I would like to again re-state my facts that we should be proud that Maharashtra is a beautiful melting pot of all cultures and religions! Whether or not there are non-marathi entrepreneurs, each and every person has contributed to the growth of the state, right?

In response to the language issue mentioned above by Dombivlikar Marathi, I think all languages are great! The use of Hindi and English only eases communication. In our democratic country, no one is forced to speak any language. Since we have hundreds of languages and even different dialect of a single language, Hindi and English - the most commonly taught and understood simplifies issues. In my opinion, a language should serve the means of communication and not be a matter of dispute. Else, we should switch over to sign language! In this regard, I believe if every state starts adopting a strict policy to follow thier regional language, India would be at loss! We would be restricting others from performing their duties purely for language bar - then no foreigners would ever want to come to India!

Why are we fighting still? Why ain’t we simply united? Why can’t we common people mature and throw the politicians making our routine life hell?

In response to question raised by Meenakshi -

“I believe if every state starts adopting a strict policy to follow thier regional language, India would be at loss! ”

Its pure and simple - every state already does this i.e. use their regional language to conduct busines with the exception of you know who - Maharashtra. I think our openness to use Hindi in every day business is being misused against us - its construed as a weekness.

As I said in earlier posts, I’m an Indian first and willing to be more than accomodating - speak whichever language that makes communication smoother - only when everyone else does the same. For heaven’s sake what you propose i.e speak hindi - we’ve already being doing for years and what we get is second class citizen treatment in our own city.

For e.g. Here’s one more examaple to our openness - When our State Transport buses travel to neighboring states they’ve boards with source and destination in 3 languages Marathi/English/Kannada (if the bus is going to Karanatak for e.g.). Now reverse the scenario when Karnatak State buses come to Maharashtra what language(s) they use on their boards - only 1 and that’s their state language!

I believe Raj Thackeray and all his followers as well as the backward class people have one thing in common - they just want to be called weak! Gather sympathy is their motto. And that’s what we all are doing via this blog as well! Giving unnecessary attention to trivial matters. Why didn’t all the followers of Mr Raj bring this issue up earlier at large? If the marathi people were so distressed and weak and unemployed, then why didn’t they wake up earlier? Just because Raj Thackeray made a few comments, the world wakes up from their sleep and realises “oh yea, we’re being treated badly?”

I’m a Maharashtrian, born and brough up in Pune - never have I felt like a weak member; be it at educational institutions or at work just because I spoke in Hindi or English. And I’ve never felt like a second class citizen!! I don’t know what that terminology implies at; but I’ve lived in Bangalore - had a lot of language problem, yet never felt like being treated as an outsider or a second class citizen! And as far as I understand, no one in the city gets the same feeling either! It’s a matter of choice - if you want to feel like a downtrodden, then even if you were as rich and influential as Warren Buffet or Bill Gates, you would just feel horrible about being yourself!

Get up people - if a Karnatake State transport guy doesn’t talk to you in a non south indian language, you don’t have worry about doing a tit - for - tat! We should be more like “Yippy! Our state transport are better than yours!”

We have so many other beautiful things in life to pursue and use our mind! Lets use it creatively for the benefit of the society as a whole instead of being destructive. You should be proud that Maharashtra is one of its kind - it’s got the best of everything and we should aim for a better state.

Given this, I really really propose that discussing the Union Budget and the US recession would be more useful to each of us here! Raj Thackeray has done what he wanted to do, none can reverse it, but we can definitely stop giving more attention to his “unpopular comments”

Nobody cares what Raj or Bal Thakrey says about Bihar or UP. Because we are proud to be born in these states. What most concern to all this crap is the involvement of Bollywood, I think that it wasn’t a wise thing to do for an artist, but since it is true and they are involve we should ban showing any movie of these artists in both the States UP and Bihar.

      Shams

Though I am not Indian but I condemn the statement of Thakrey about Bihar and UP I also stand with these people. We are living here together like a community and we like Indian movies too, but from now on we will only watch movie of the actors who are not supporting Thakrey.

The message of these parties are not the annihilation of other religions rather it’s to make India strong militarily regardless of any other religion. In other sense, we all are Hindus since we grew up in a Hinduism (way of life) atmosphere. I love the leaderrs of these parties since they all have superior organisational skills equal to any other leaders in the world, be it past or present! But these goddamn liberal and secular groups don’t let these parties gain their Indian-Unison motive. Believe me, if you all people support these parties we will be the strongest nation within 50 years in regards to economy, development, and military. Hindustan will be the next “SUPERPOWER.”

I support Raj Thackeray though I don’t like his way of raising a point by beating helpless North Indian labours & taxi drivers. I read thru all comments & article but don’t look like anybody is ever has vision on this issue. Everybody looks like has created opinion on some news, blogs & chit chats.
One point want to say, our constitution knows this problem & has solution. You all may be knowing that we have constitutional right to settle & live in any part of India. It is under article 19 (e) as

“All citizens shall have the right—
      (d) to move freely throughout the territory of India;
      (e) to reside and settle in any part of the territory of India”

But most of you don’t know that every right is to be used wisely otherwise there are restrictions like in same article para 5 it is written as

” Nothing in sub-clauses (d) and (e) of the said clause shall affect the operation of any existing law in so far as it imposes , or prevent the State
from making any law imposing, reasonable restrictions on the exercise of any of the rights conferred by the said sub-clauses either in the interests of
the general public or for the protection of the interests of any Scheduled Tribe ”

That mean if Raj is really interested in limiting people from other states to influance Marathi culture then he has to win the necessary seats in state assembly & create law to restrict people entering in Maharashtra or mumbai. He is free to do this under constitution.

My view is making law should be last resort so North Indians should behave properly in Mumbai to avoid such issue. Why any North Indian even entertain Lallu, Mulayam, Amar Singh, Mayavati in Mumbai when he himself came to mumbai because of these polititians. Why need to celebrate UP day in Maharashtra in open. If they really proud of UP then they should never leave UP in first place. If north indian is indeed hard worker then why UP/Bihar per capita income is less than Maharshtra inspite of UP/Bihar have better farm land than most of Maharshtra.

Rakesh, thanks for commenting here. Your comments are interesting but have flaws in it.

“If they really proud of UP then they should never leave UP in first place.”

By the same logic no Indian who is proud of his country should never leave India in the first place. Right? Then what should we call those millions of Indians who are living abroad and bringing laurel for the country. Are not they proud of their country? If yes, then why they left India?

“If north indian is indeed hard worker then why UP/Bihar per capita income is less than Maharshtra inspite of UP/Bihar have better farm land than most of Maharshtra.”

North Indians are not hard workers ? Do you want to say that per capita income of a state depends upon how hard working it’s people are.

Per capita income of Delhi is more than Maharashtra. So people of Delhi are more hard working than that of Maharashtra ? Delhi has almost no farm land.

India stands at 143 in terms of per capita income. That means people in 142 countries above India are more hard working than we Indians?

“Why any North Indian even entertain Lallu, Mulayam, Amar Singh, Mayavati in Mumbai when he himself came to mumbai because of these polititians. Why need to celebrate UP day in Maharashtra in open”

Why anybody should have any objection on that buddy? Don’t you think it is a very petty issue? They are regional leaders with national aspirations. Any leader from Maharashtra can come to North and held a rally. Nobody will object. You can celebrate Maharashtra Day in UP with a bang. No one will object. Really:)

It’s just politics my friend. Elections are due next year and we will see more attacks on North Indians to attract sympathy of innocent Marathis. It’s a political survival strategy of Raj Thackeray. Don’t get influenced by it.

Please compare Delhi with Mumbai & UP/Bihar with Maharashtra as state to state & city to city. & don’t argue that Delhi is state. I want you to make comparision apple to apple.
If you know then this issue started with SP leaders saying we will distribute lathis to Bhaiyyas in Mumbai & Raj given is reaction that why lot of marathis are supporting him. Raj party done similar things in past with railway candidates coming from Bihar bit nobody in maharshtra supported him at that time.
I am asking some questions to all for thought,
      1) Why India should have states on language basis
      2) Why english (Non indian) is required as commumnication language in Govt (I am not talking about its business / science advantages) when any Indian language (Hindi) would have do that job well.
      3) Why Indian Govt gives domicile certificates to its citizen because it is encroachment on right to move, settle in any part of country.
      4) Why people feel threaten when somebody says if you are in maharashtra you should know marathi. (But don’t mind to say in Delhi you should understand Hindi)

    40. Eklavya said,

      Wrote on March 24, 2008 @ 9:06 pm

OK, though Delhi is a state let us remove it from our comparison chart. What about Haryana ? It has more per capita income than Maharashtra. Does that mean people in Haryana are more hardworking than that of Maharashtra?

My point is : It is ridiculous to determine how hardworking somebody is by comparing the per capita income of his state. This is simply not fair.

The recent questions raised by you are really important. There is so much rotten in our policies that we need to have a fresh look on it. These questions and their answers require a detailed background and explanation which I think is not proper to discuss here. May be in some future posts, I’ll write about them. If you want to contribute any article, feel free to do it.

After receiving so many comments on this issue, I feel that people have mixed opinion on Raj Thackeray. Some hate him, some admire him. All have their own logics behind their opinions. As of my own opinion, I have expressed it earlier also that people in Maharashtra have every right to preserve their rich cultural heritage and nobody should be allowed to malign it. However, this can not be done if we take the recourse of violence and abuse. Violence will bring us nowhere.
It will only lead to more violence and more acrimony between states which in the long run is not good for India.

Wow! This topic still seems to be hot!

For once, I noticed Rakesh mentioned that people are free to move without causing nuisance to the state culture “Nothing in sub-clauses (d) and (e) of the said clause shall affect the operation of any existing law in so far as it imposes , or prevent the State
from making any law imposing, reasonable restrictions on the exercise of any of the rights conferred by the said sub-clauses either in the interests of
the general public or for the protection of the interests of any Scheduled Tribe ” How many times have others let you feel that your culture is endangered? Do you not celebrate birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Friendship Day, New Year Eve and so many other Days that are not a part of the Indian tradition / culture? The Thackerays may be opposing them, but there are so many things and times in life even they are influenced by “foreign” things. Also, if people here are so well read about our Constitution’s each and every paragraph, then they should also be aware that our Constitution DOES NOT propogate Violence as a mean of conveying any message.
We are all the same Indians - shuffling of the many Indians is happening due to globalisation, industrialisation and liberalisation. As Eklavya puts it, “Violence will bring us nowhere”

Recently the MNS ganged up and beat a few non-marathi at Juhu beach during Holi. Does anyone think this was a right action? Is this what our Indian, Gandian, Marathi, Bihari, UP or any culture teach us? If nothing, think on human grounds - some people who are purely celebrating a festival are beaten up for doing so. What sense does violence make? A marathi jehadi troop? I think MNS is only becoming infamous for its activities. Honestly, violence in this form has no end - it is a vicious circle and will prove to doom the country and its image. People come to Mumbai to earn a living - and it is unjust to stop anyone from doing so. If Raj Thackeray has an issue with the political leaders of other part of the country, he should settle his personal issues with them directly rather than injuring innocent souls like us. Finally, in his so - called - pro marathi violence, a marathi man died in Nashik.

Instead, MNS should do constructive work like setting up a marathi council, promoting marathi cultures and festivals and even literature. They could probably even set up an employment centre for the unemployed and help their fellow associates if they feel that maharashtrians are in danger of extinction! I’m sure the party would win a few seats and may be God will wash off a few sins.

Meenakshi well said. Nobody is backing violent methods. But media in India is so biased that it didn’t questioned in a same way to north indian politisions who also given similar statements like Raj. for example Abu Azami said SP will distribute lathis to Bhaiyyas in Mumbai. Uma Bharati & Lalu said they will do Chaath Pooja in Mumbai & asked Raj to dare to stop them. These headlines are making Raj, hero within Maharashtra which is his agenda. Media need to access whole problem neutrally & potrate real concern of Marathis without provocating the North Indians.
When there is a smoke we know some where fire is burning & we try to estinguish the fire & not to put more oil into fire. Beating bhaiyyas is kind of smoke & fire is unequal development in India. For this issue good answer from Lalu, Uma & Abu is not to do Chhath Pooja in Mumbai but to create good atmosphere in Bihar/ Up so that companies will put plants there.
For example Tata want to build 1 lakh car. They can not put plant in developed state because of high labour cost so such projects need to be put in undeveloped regions like singur. If north indian polititians try they can find such a projects & pursue.
I just want to clarify to readers about Constitution more as we are more aware about our rights & not about duties or limitations on rights.

when will we indians learn to be indians? when will we shed this plague of regionalism?

i read the blog and the comments here. ppl talk about 2000 yr old maratha empire, i have one question to those ppl. the 2000 yr old maratha empire doesnt exists now, nobody who posted comment here was a citizen of it, and yet some how they are loyal to it? we all belong to the democratic republic of india, we experience it daily, we shape its future, and yet we r not loyal to it?

if u say u r loyal to it despite these comments then explain to me y are u only claiming the good parts of it? mumbai is the financial capital and an important city, so the maharashtrians want to claim it their own, y not also assume responsibility of the bad parts of india too? does this mean thr are absolutely no underdeveloped areas and communities in maharashtra? why do u accept them n not other bad parts of india? if we dont accept them, how will we the nation improve those parts and save the ppl thr.

every state plays a important in the whole machine that is india. forget the cultural diversity that makes all of india rich for a moment, and lets talk economics (since everybody is more concerned about it) punjab and haryana produce the majority of the food that the country eats, bihar and jharkhand are the countries sources of metal…these are jus a few examples, every state does its part in catering to the needs of the country.

and the one thing that i strongly believe in is that metropolitan cities dont belong to states, they belong to the country. delhi, mumbai, calcutta, pune, bangalore, chennai represent india. they are centres of industry and trade. they generate huge amount of resources in taxes that are used for the interests of the entire country. they belong to india and every indian. and they are made into such important cities by ppl from all over the country.

if stupid politicians like raj thackery mislead ppl in such ridiculous and dangerous quests, the only thing i foresee happening is that mumbai might not be the financial capital of india in the near future. does anybody really think that big companies will let raj thackray bully them around to provide 80% job reservations to marathis? they ll jus move if this continues. its not the first time this is happening, capitals get moved all the time, on all levels…

we all need to grow up, not jus the marathies but also north indian or whoever ppl who made their own restrictions in and around mumbai. we need to realize we r indians, we r lucky indians who are alive in this day and age when india is blooming. its a responsibility far greater than mumbai. we are making fools of ourselves on the world scene.

Today Raj Thackeray issued a warning to local business men in Maharashtra that they should employee at least 80% of their workforce from local Marathi population and should avoid recruiting workers from UP/Bihar. He also warned them of serious consequences if they don’t follow his instructions.

This guy is behaving like a self-appointed dictator. The irony is that the Congress Ruled Maha. Govt will not do anything to stop him as for them he is their trump card for the next year assembly election. Who is better than Raj to spoil the game of ShivSena ?

China is influxing Han people into Tibet & reducing Tibetens to minority status in Tibet. This is done in 2 provinces which were Tibeten majority in 1950 when China invaded tibet. Now you may be wondering why I am writing about Tibet here. This is exactly happening for Mumbai from decades & now for rest of Maharashtra. As per 1941 sensus Mumbai have 54% marathi speaking population while in 1991 it reduced to 30%. Today may be Marathi speakers are 20%~25%. Only this time Hindi polititions are interested in Mumbai & people telling Marathis about Nationalism. The same people are opposing Chinese Govt. about Tibet policy but don’t see wrong in changing demographics of Mumbai. My request to all you blog is to either endorse China Govt. about their agenda as they are doing this to keep China unite or stop criticizing regionalism. Simultaniously China & Raj are not wrong.

Issues which he underline are indeed important and there is no one from state government who has ever thought of such.
Central government always reserves seats for every state in central services. There are many cases revealed that people from UP & Bihar are filling there nominations from Maharashtra though they does not belong to this state. This is a cheat case and i am surprise that this has been overlook for so many years.
Political parties from UP & Bihar who failed to run there own government in there own states are now supporting migrants, there is no one who can look for those poors who are still living in there states.
Chhat pooja is one of the mega event which political parties are not trying to use to prove there powers. I dont know why common man need political support to perform there rituals.
We havent seen such case for any other cultural event from any other community.

I would like to ask a question…just have a look around wherever you reside/work…most of females must have put on salwar kameez,a North Indian attire..what do u order when you go to a restaurant…matar-paneer,tandoori chicken, tandoori roti etc etc ,all North Indian dishes..even in Mumbai I haven’t seen restaurants serving local cusines(I guess if there is any)…cloth and food are pillars of any culture…
Indian music is classified into Carnatic music(South Indian origin) and Hindutani classical(North Indian origin, precisely Lucknow)..infact most of Maharsahtrian musicians owe allegiance to Hindutani classical..this is culture…

Something to raj thackeray’s manoos :

It is people like you who are responsible for spreading goonda raj in Mumbai. It appears that your knowledge of India is very poor and you have never been to North India. Otherwise, you would have never uttered such nonsense. Most Government jobs are grabbed by UP & Bihari students not because of their nexus with the authorities. They don’t use any fraudulent means for that. It is the result of sheer hard work they do in Delhi and other cities of North India while living in small rooms in groups. Just come to Delhi and see for yourself how thousands and thousands of Bihari students are burning the midnight oil to clear the Government competitive exams. The social and economical structure of Bihar do not offer many opportunities to young people there. One of the most preferred alternative in such a situation is to work hard and clear an exam. That’s why we see so many Bihari students in service.

I was thinking of closing comments on this post. However, your nonsense has forced me to allow more comments here. First of all know your country India in some more detail. Only then you should talk about your Maratha pride. Maharashtra exists because India exists. Without India, no state can survive on its own.

i am a marathi manoos & try to tell u all marathi peoples just think if raj thakre success in eradicating all north indians from maharashtra what is the guarantee then he will keep quiet,i know what he will do next he will try to throw south indians outside then muslims & last he will make differences in we marathi peoples on basis of caste untill he becomes a chief minister or a powerful politician, just try to understand this is politics, its sure this raj is not going to make any difference only we r going to fight with each other & die & this raj is going to sit in his house & laugh as britishers did before,as they know anyone can rule india only by caste & religion politics,so know also time has not gone,as we people can loose many things like money, time, blood ,our lives by fighting, nothing we can gain,so just try to work hard be successful in our life by all this fighting we r wasting our time.Jai Hind ,Jai Maharashtra,

      Hi,

I’m Tanmay Shanishchara, student of PGPCME, MICA-EDC. I am glad to introduce you ‘ThinkYuva’, a student initiative from Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA) - EDC. The initiative is to bring about a mental leap in the people of the country with the belief that such leap would bring about an all-round development of the country. For this purpose, ThinkYuva would be organizing various events and road shows. For this event, invitations would be called from students from colleges across the country mentioning one important problem in their vicinity and the solution to it. The themes chosen for this year are civic sense, children related issues and environmental issues.

The final event is planned for the 18th of August. We look forward to an active involvement from your side. We believe that this initiative and your support would be great for the development of our nation.

To express your precious views and for further details visit: http://www.thinkyuva.com

      Thanks and Regards,
      Tanmay Shanishchara

Have people been reading about the latest developments in Pune’s higher education institutions? MNS has ransacked and injured many during the admission process and even the Income Tax department to protest against non marathis. Incidentally, most people are maharashtrians! Shame on the MNS. I wonder why the government is not taking any stringent action against them? How can they possibly stone a educational institution? Hasn’t the marathi culture taught them that education is a form of Goddess Saraswati and intelligence of God Ganesha? They’re actually behaving as if they’re above the universal truth of the divine power! Its a shame that they’re ransacking these institutes which have majority students from Maharashtra and injuring maharashtrians. Pune’s old institutions anyway accept negligible outsiders.
Furthermore, they stoned the ammunition factory during and exam held there and the income tax department during interviews. The MNS is sure to bring shame to the people of Maharashtra. JUst as Naigaonkar said,

” may god give him all the strength and support in enriching the lives of marathis living in maharashtra and all the unwanted weeds been thrown out of the state which truly belongs to the marathi”

I think all like minded marathis should be exiled. If anyone here has read the series of Dr Brian Weiss books of past lives - he has proved that people who have enmity towards a certain sect, they will reborn in that sect and will be tortured similarly they way they tortured in their earlier lifetime. I hope all the extreme marathis stop behaving like jehadi since hinduism does not promote violence.

Oh well, this post can never end! Because unless each and every MNS member as well as wanna-be MNS members are treated by neurologists, this post will be never ending. They didn’t spare Independence Day at a school too! MNS broke down Mercedes Benz International School for not celebrating I day with the students. So there was a classic episode of stones being pelted and glasses being broken. Wow! That’s definitely a fantastic way to convey and force someone to celebrate I Day! The students, mostly non Indians, did not attend school, thanks to the long weekend. But is this the right attitude and the correct way to deal with situations? I don’t think MNS knows anything about the marathi and the Indian culture. They’re surely a part of the jehadi systems! Surprisingly, our legal systems release such MNS members on bail. Is our democracy worth this? Why isn’t the government or the police acting fast…Just as the terrorist blasts were swiftly acted upon!

MNS, we demand to know the reason behind such weak and disgraceful activities that only bring shame to have you as our political party.

Every hoarding in Mumbai has to be written in marahi as its state where marathi is spoken,,no other state in India has marathi hoardings so why should mumbai have gujarati and Hindi hoardings, so watever MNS guys are doing is commendable, anything against the verdicts ,actions ,deeds of the MNS’s actvists will be damned ..I appreciate them for the development and trying to imbibe the marathi culture in every individual whos living in Mumbai……

      Once more LONG LIVE RAJ
